Position Summary

Core Accountabilities

General

  • Review building plans through consultation with homeowners and designers to ensure minimum standards are applied in accordance with the National Building Code - 2019 Alberta Edition.
  • Review plans to ensure compliance with the Land Use Bylaw (setbacks, heights, floor area, uses).
  • Issue Building Permits and associated sub-trade permits.
  • Liaise with all levels of Rocky View County to increase effective communication and expedite concerns, questions and issues.
  • Review Alternative Solution Proposals for conformance to legislation
  • Write Orders under the Safety Codes Act.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
  • File maintenance and follow-up review of documents throughout construction.
  • Attend court proceedings when needed.

  • Display a professional and ethical responsibility to protect privacy, use information appropriately, and maintain the confidentiality and security of all information related to employees, business and residents of Rocky View County.

Site Inspections

  • Inspect buildings under construction at various stages, to ensure conformity to examined plans and the National Building Code - 2019 Alberta Edition.
  • Complete site inspections, write Inspection Reports and maintain records in accordance with the Quality Management Plan.
  • Monitor and report construction activity undertaken without required approval.
  • Collaborate with various inspection agencies (Plumbing, Gas, Health, Fire, and Electrical).

Position Requirements

Possess a Journeyman Carpenter or a Civil/Architectural Technology background along with a minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible and diversified experience as a Safety Codes Officer.

  • Certification as a Part 3 and HVAC all Safety Codes Officer through the Safety Codes Council.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership skills with experience as a teacher and a mentor.
  • Display strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Possess and demonstrate excellent time management, organizational and decision-making ability.
  • Demonstrate superior customer service skills to both internal and external customers.
  • Well-developed interpretation skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively on a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite.
  • Possess a valid Class 5 driver’s license.
  • Experience using CityView is an asset.
  • Work in accordance with the requirements established by the RVC Health and Safety Program and the Alberta OHS Act, Regulation and Code.
  • Take reasonable care to protect their health and safety and other persons at or in the vicinity of the worksite while they are working.
