The Environmental Health and Safety Director at The City University of New York (CUNY) is responsible for overseeing the health and safety protocols on campus, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, and managing safety training for faculty, staff, and students. This senior-level position involves evaluating health and safety hazards, conducting investigations, and collaborating with various departments to maintain a safe work environment during construction and renovation projects.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate health and safety hazards on campus, including chemical, physical, and biological agents, and recommend appropriate control measures.
- Conduct campus-wide safety and health investigations, including teaching and research laboratories in coordination with the laboratory safety office.
- Maintain the College's computerized chemical inventory system.
- Ensure and coordinate environmental health and safety training for faculty, staff, and students as required.
- Develop and implement compliance strategies and programs for applicable regulatory authorities.
- Represent the College with various regulatory agencies regarding environmental health and safety.
- Coordinate with CUNY, DASNY, AVP for Facilities, and the Chief Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds to develop and implement control measures during construction and renovation projects.
- Serve as a technical resource regarding standards for laboratories and other College facilities during building projects and renovations.
- Coordinate oversight of all environmental remediation work on campus.
- Collaborate with the Laboratory Safety Office and Public Safety Office on various matters relating to environmental health and safety, fire safety, and EPA compliance.
- Provide oversight and suggestions to administration for regulatory compliance and quality control of food vendor operations.
- Coordinate with the Chief Superintendent, third-party vendor, CUNY, and CUNY's program consultant on all facets of the campus chemical water treatment program and cooling tower compliance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in a related field.
- Eight years of related experience in environmental health and safety.
- Knowledge of OSHA, EPA, NFPA, New York State and City regulations, and familiarity with current applicable standards and procedures.
Nice-to-haves
- An advanced degree in environmental science, risk management, industrial hygiene, chemistry, or a related engineering, public or business management discipline.
