Position Overview
The Director of Patient Safety and Quality provides leadership, direction, and administration to ensure consistency, follow-through, and successful completion of strategic objectives. This role focuses on developing cross-functional, system-wide relationships beyond the Department of Patient Safety and Quality to facilitate multidisciplinary collaborations. The goal is to monitor quality and safety metrics, eliminate barriers, and achieve high-quality, reliable outcomes. The position will foster a culture of collaboration, safety, and continuous improvement.
Responsibilities
- Partner with the Chief Quality Officer and department leaders to develop and execute the strategic plan for the Department of Patient Safety and Quality.
- Implement the network's safety and quality strategic plan across the medical center.
- Promote a culture of safety and lead system-wide patient safety and quality improvement initiatives.
- Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and staff to improve processes, reduce errors, and enhance quality outcomes.
- Lead efforts to address health disparities through prioritization and action planning.
- Work with Data Analytics to collect data for quality improvement and research.
- Participate in relevant meetings related to quality and safety.
- Design, plan, and coordinate safety, quality, and performance improvement activities as a content expert.
- Oversee event review processes, including Root Cause Analysis and other evaluations.
- Stay current with patient safety practices, regulations, and high reliability principles, incorporating them into activities.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and incorporate updates into safety and quality activities.
- Assist in corporate compliance efforts, including managing disclosure programs and investigating fraud and abuse.
- Coordinate with Risk Management to analyze exposures, develop policies, and report to the Board.
- Develop and improve patient outcome metrics and implement evidence-based practices.
- Build external alliances with community organizations, health agencies, and policymakers.
- Support physician recruitment and practice contracts related to maternal-fetal health (if applicable).
- Adhere to organizational standards and maintain professional growth.
- Perform other duties as assigned, maintaining confidentiality and meeting performance standards.
Qualifications
Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Master's Degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, Public Health, or related field.
- 7-10 years of clinical experience in acute care or relevant healthcare experience.
- 3-5 years of experience in patient safety and quality.
- Experience with NDNQI & Magnet Accreditation (hospital-based roles).
- Strong communication, presentation, and computer skills.
Preferred Skills and Certifications
- Expertise in Performance Improvement methodologies.
- HRO experience.
- Highly collaborative leadership style.
Required Certifications
- Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality or similar national certification.
Preferred Certifications
- Attainment of CPPS within one year of hire.
