Role Purpose

The Health & Safety Manager – Retail is responsible for leading and managing Health & Safety for all retail operations, ensuring stores and retail sales channels are safe places to work and shop.

Reporting to the Head of Safety & Security, this role provides functional leadership for Retail H&S, translating group policies and regulatory requirements into practical, store-ready standards, while partnering closely with Retail Operations to drive strong safety ownership and performance.

Key Responsibilities

Retail H&S Leadership

  • Lead the Retail Health & Safety function nationwide across all stores and retail sales channels.
  • Provide direction, coaching and oversight to Area Health & Safety Specialists to ensure consistent execution.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for Retail H&S matters, aligned with the Head of Safety & Security.

Policy, Governance & Compliance

  • Implement and continuously improve Retail Health & Safety policies, standards and operating guidelines.
  • Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory and Group requirements while keeping policies practical for store operations.
  • Monitor legislative and industry changes and advise on retail impact.

Partnership with Retail Operations

  • Work closely with Retail Operations, Store General Managers and Area Teams to embed Health & Safety into daily operations.
  • Support risk identification, assessment and mitigation at store level.
  • Provide Health & Safety input for new store openings, refurbishments and operational changes.

Risk Management & Incident Response

  • Drive reduction of colleague and customer accidents, injuries and near-misses.
  • Lead serious incident investigations, including root cause analysis and corrective action tracking.
  • Ensure timely escalation, reporting and follow-up of incidents.

Monitoring, Reporting & Culture

  • Establish effective monitoring, audit and reporting processes for Retail H&S performance.
  • Analyse safety data and trends to identify risks and improvement opportunities.
  • Drive a positive safety culture through engagement, awareness and capability building.

Job Requirements

  • Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Science, Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Registered Safety Officer with DOSH Malaysia (mandatory); professional certification such as CMIOSH, CMCIEH or equivalent is preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in Health & Safety, preferably within retail or multi-site operations, with exposure to leading teams or regional specialists.
  • Strong working knowledge of incident investigation, risk assessment and regulatory compliance.
  • Proven leadership and people management capability, with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • Good understanding of retail store operations and frontline working environments.
  • Strong communication, analytical and reporting skills, with sound judgement in complex or time-critical situations.
  • Willingness to travel extensively across Malaysia and respond at short notice to serious retail incidents when required.
