Salary: $80,000 to $100,000
Pathfind has partnered with an excellent company in the construction industry to find their next Safety Officer. Reporting to the General Manager the Safety Officer is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing all safety programs and procedures, ensuring a safe and healthy work environment for all employees, subcontractors, and visitors. This role encompasses comprehensive safety management, compliance, training, and documentation, with a focus on continuous improvement and proactive risk mitigation.
What You Will Be Doing
Safety Program Development and Implementation
- Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive safety programs and procedures intfh accordance with all applicable regulations (OSHA, provincial legislations, COR standards, etc.)
- Develop and maintain critical task lists, general task lists, and job lists, ensuring they are current and relevant.
- Develop and revise Safe Work Practices (SWP) and Safe Job Procedures (SJP) with input from personnel.
- Conduct hazard assessments, including Formal Task Hazard Analysis (THA), Field Level Hazard Assessments (FLHA), and Pre-Job Hazard Assessments.
- Develop and implement site-specific Emergency Response Plans (ERP) and Site Safety Plans.
- Implement and maintain a fire prevention program.
- Maintain a comprehensive safety manual and super binder.
- Implement customer-specific safety requirements.
- Develop and maintain an electronic safety reporting system (e.g., Go Forms).
- Develop safe work processes in collaboration with personnel, ensuring effective implementation and adherence.
Compliance and Documentation
- Conduct regular safety inspections and audits of work sites, equipment, and employee practices.
- Maintain accurate safety records and documentation, including incident reports, training records, inspection reports, and meeting minutes.
- Monitor and enforce all safety policies and procedures.
- Maintain records of incidents, classifications, types, audiometric testing, WCB claims, safety meeting minutes, noise measurements, first aid records, and disciplinary notices.
- Maintain pre-qualified subcontractor safety program records and performance.
- Ensure all necessary permits, licenses, and certifications are current (e.g., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba permits, IFTA renewals, vehicle registrations).
- Manage WCB accounts, including modified work programs and claim management.
- Conduct and manage COR audits and implement action plans.
- Ensure all required safety signage and stickers are in place.
- Maintain and update WHMIS binders and SDS documentation.
Training and Communication
- Conduct safety orientations and training programs for all employees, subcontractors, and visitors.
- Conduct safety meetings and toolbox talks (including bi-monthly shop meetings).
- Conduct competency assessments for all personnel on required tasks.
- Provide safety leadership and guidance to project teams.
- Promote a positive safety culture and foster a strong commitment to safety.
- Maintain training records, schedule training providers, and ensure employees are up-to-date on safety standards.
- Schedule respirator fit testing and audiometric testing.
Incident Investigation and Reporting
- Investigate accidents and incidents, identify root causes, and implement corrective and preventive actions.
- Monitor and follow up on near misses and incident reports.
- Report safety statistics and summaries (monthly, quarterly, yearly) to relevant stakeholders (OH&S, customers, ISNET, Avetta, etc.).
Recurring Activities
- Monthly: Fire extinguisher inspections, training record checks, overhead crane logbook maintenance, first aid inventory checks, shop safety meetings, safety handout distribution, WCB account management, monthly safety summaries, site safety activity checklists.
- Quarterly: Joint Work Site Health and Safety Committee (JWSHSC) meetings, first aid inventory at sites, documented PPE inspections, review of site orientations, evacuation roll call checks, shop safety inspections, pro-rate record maintenance, IFTA tax returns, fire extinguisher inspections (field sites/trucks/equipment).
- Bi-Annually: Review of critical task inventory, THAAs on critical tasks, office safety inspections, carrier profile maintenance, audiometric testing, competency reviews.
- Annually: Safety policy reviews, SWP/SJP reviews, ERP reviews, driver abstract reviews, chain/rigging certification, SRL recertification, 2-way radio checks, permit renewals, paint bay inspections, site safety sign inventory, mechanic hazard assessments, certified fire extinguisher and sprinkler system inspections, respirator fit testing, COR audits, fire prevention inspections, evacuation drills, pro-rate annual reports, vehicle registration and carrier compliance checks, vehicle lift inspections, IFTA license renewal reviews, overhead crane inspections, SDS reviews.
Who You Are
- Proven experience as a Safety Manager or in a similar role.
- Strong knowledge of OSHA, provincial legislation, and COR standards.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Ability to effectively lead and motivate others.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft 365 software programs.
- Relevant safety certifications.
