A Calgary-based environmental consulting and waste management organization serving the upstream oil and gas sector. The company provides full-service remediation and reclamation contracting, technical services, and waste management solutions. Head office is located in downtown Calgary, with active projects across Alberta.

Position Summary

The Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Manager is responsible for fostering a strong culture of safety and environmental excellence across the organization. This role ensures compliance with all applicable health, safety, and environmental regulations, while implementing and enforcing internal policies and best practices.

The HSE Manager plans, implements, monitors, and continuously improves protective and preventative measures to minimize operational risk and prevent accidents, injuries, and environmental incidents. The role also provides leadership through mentoring, coaching, and training employees on HSE standards and best practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead compliance with all applicable health, safety, and environmental legislation and regulations within operating provinces.
  • Ensure all reasonable and appropriate measures are taken to protect the health and safety of employees, clients, and visitors at job sites and office locations.
  • Promote and enhance HSE awareness across all levels of the organization.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain an incident reporting system that encourages proactive reporting of hazards, near misses, and incidents.
  • Respond promptly and effectively to employee HSE concerns.
  • Coordinate and/or deliver safety training programs (first aid, CPR, accident prevention, investigations, workplace inspections, etc.).
  • Maintain COR certification, ISNetworld, and other client, industry, or provincial compliance requirements.
  • Maintain, review, and update the Safety Manual to ensure alignment with OH&S regulations and client expectations.
  • Maintain accurate safety records, logs, and documentation.
  • Ensure knowledge and application of WCB and OH&S worker rights, responsibilities, and regulations.
  • Provide a visible safety presence at job sites and operational locations.
  • Participate in and prepare HSE-related components for bid qualification and prequalification packages.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation.
  • Graduate Certificate or Diploma in a related discipline (HSE, Environmental Studies, etc.).
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant HSE experience, including at least 5 years in a leadership capacity.
  • Advanced knowledge and application of HSE management systems.
  • Strong understanding of provincial OH&S, WCB, Alberta Environment and Protected Areas (AEP), and other applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Proven ability to analyze and resolve complex issues efficiently.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain professional relationships with clients, subcontractors, and HSE professionals.
  • Proficiency with HSE-related software and systems (SiteDocs, ISNetworld, ComplyWorks, Microsoft Office).

Skills, Competencies & Requirements

  • Valid Class 5 Alberta driver’s licence (non-GDL) with clean abstract.
  • Ability to travel to project sites across Alberta as required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization.

Working Conditions

  • Primarily office-based role with periodic fieldwork at active project sites.
