Building Safety Code Officer III - Compliance Team

As a Building Safety Codes Officer III, you will play a vital role in ensuring the safety and structural integrity of our City’s built environment. This position goes beyond standard inspections; you will serve as a technical expert and mentor, guiding others through complex safety code applications. What will you do?
- Conduct complex plans examinations and onsite inspections for new constructions, renovations, and additions to ensure compliance with building codes and regulations
- Provide technical mentorship, coaching, and training to Safety Codes Officers I & II to foster professional growth and consistent application of standards
- Review and make critical decisions on variances and alternative solutions for unique or large-scale construction projects
- Grant detailed permits and prepare legal agreements for specialized construction needs, such as crane swing paths
- Collaborate with various City departments and provincial authorities to coordinate reviews and ensure cohesive reporting
- Act as a lead inspector on multifaceted cases, sharing advanced knowledge and tips with the broader team
- Input and maintain accurate data, reports, and correspondence within the POSSE system
Qualifications
- Completion of the 12th school grade
- One of the following education/experience pathways:
- Journeyman certification (Carpenter, Plumber, Electrician, Sheet Metal Worker, or Bricklayer) recognized in Alberta, plus 5 years of relevant building construction experience post-certification
- A two-year technology diploma in a related field, plus 7 years of relevant building construction experience post-diploma
- An Engineering or Architecture degree recognized in Canada, plus 5 years of relevant building construction experience (with at least 1 year post-degree)
- Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Safety Codes Officer
- Registered as a Safety Codes Officer with Group A Level 3 certification (Residential, Part 9, and Part 3) with the Alberta Safety Codes Council
Assets
- Demonstrated experience in coaching, mentoring, or leading technical teams
- Experience working on large-scale, unique, or high-profile construction projects
Skills required for success
- Advanced knowledge of the Safety Codes Act, Alberta Building Code, and City Bylaws
- Strong communication skills to explain technical concepts and foster buy-in from contractors, designers, and interested and/or affected parties
- Ability to analyze and interpret complex architectural and engineering plans
- Exceptional leadership skills with a proven ability to mentor staff and provide technical direction
- Proficiency in managing multiple priorities and projects within a fast-paced environment
- Ability to make impartial, transparent decisions that prioritize public safety

Conditions of Employment
- Hire is dependent on a Criminal Records Check (CRC) security clearance satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
- Valid Province of Alberta Class 5 Motor Vehicle License
- Candidates must arrange their own vehicle and business auto insurance to be reimbursed for mileage according to City of Edmonton policy
Work Environment
- Note: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52
