Position Summary

Reporting to the Manager, Health & Safety, this position works in coordination with supervisory staff within all City divisions, departments and business units in support of a positive and effective safety culture. The Coordinator, Health & Safety works with organizational supervisors to advise and guide them in their roles within the Health, Safety and Environmental Management System. This support will include providing tools and resources, coordinating tasks, communicating responsibilities, and tracking progress. This position works closely with the Manager, Health & Safety to implement the City’s Health, Safety and Environmental Management System, which includes providing input and feedback on health and safety issues and identifying areas of opportunity and improvement.

Responsibilities

include, but are not limited to

  • Maintain and update Site Emergency Response Plans for all City facilities.
  • Support Supervisors and applicants in completing the Health and Safety vendor management prequalification process.
  • Ensure health and safety meeting and inspection schedules are adhered to in accordance with the City Health, Safety and Environmental Management System (HSEMS).
  • Perform regular internal inspections of City worksites to determine and implement corrective actions to progress safety performance across all departments.
  • Assist the Manager, Health & Safety in the development, review and implementation of the Health, Safety and Environmental Management System (HSEMS).
  • Work with Supervisors and the Manager, Health & Safety to develop and implement health and safety training sessions for multiple Departments and Business Units.
  • Liaise with City staff, maintain a positive, collaborative and solution driven approach for all matters related to health and safety.
  • Attend incident scenes and support Supervisors in their incident investigations by helping to determine appropriate direct and root causes, as well as appropriate corrective and preventative actions.
  • Support the organization’s commitment to the physical, psychological and social well-being of all workers.
  • Comply with all City policies, work procedures, rules, safety instructions, and relevant directives in the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation and Code.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a post-secondary Certificate or Diploma in the field of Occupational Health and Safety. Certification as a Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST) is required, while a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) certification is considered an asset. A minimum of three years experience in Health and Safety is required. Experience working in a municipal setting is considered an asset. The incumbent will possess an Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License, as travel to other worksites is imperative, and a valid First Aid Certificate. This role requires a high level of computer proficiency, which includes experience with Microsoft Office (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). A solid understanding of the City’s organization, processes, procedures, and the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation, and Code is essential. The ideal candidate will be flexible in their role, creative when performing in unfamiliar environments, manage their time accordingly to meet the requirements of the job, and clearly communicate both verbally and in written expression.

Hours of Work: 37.5 hours weekly, Monday – Friday
