Occupational Health and Safety Director

City of Portland, Maine

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY DIRECTOR

Human Resources Department

The City of Portland is looking for a passionate safety professional to continue building on our existing safety and workers’ compensation programs that protect the City’s more than 1,800 employees. The Occupational Health and Safety Director coordinates a team of four other safety professionals and works collaboratively with our human resources and legal teams, as well as department heads, supervisors, and employees. They are the front line for ensuring our employees are safe; that the City operates in full compliance with federal, state, and local laws as well as best industry practices; and that the City’s human and fiscal resources are protected.

On the safety side, this position drafts and implements policies and programs; oversees our various safety committees; consults on a myriad of safety issues; conducts trainings; and is responsible for helping create a workplace safety culture. The Director also oversees a workers’ compensation budget of $1.5 million; works closely with our workers’ compensation TPA and outside counsel to administer claims; analyzes claims and looks for opportunities to mitigate risk; and helps manage the return-to-work process for our injured employees. The two functions work together to reduce workplace injuries and improve safety.

The successful candidate will foster an environment that supports learning and growth, understand how to create a culture where safety professionals are seen as trusted partners and everyone takes responsibility for workplace safety, and have a sense of humor. They will have excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills and be comfortable working with all employees, from front line workers to upper management. Curiosity and a growth mindset are critical, and excellent technology skills and a commitment to using technology to improve processes and procedures is important for success. Excellent organizational and analytical skills are required.

The qualified candidate must have significant experience leading safety initiatives, analyzing and managing workers compensation claims, and leading a team. Offers of employment are contingent upon completion of a satisfactory criminal background check.

The starting annual salary for this position is $90,700 to $105,147 for well qualified candidates, with a full salary range up to $114,920. The City of Portland prides itself on its outstanding benefits, collegial and mission-driven work environment, work-life balance, and options for some flexible work arrangements.
