Director of Safety and Security
City of WindsorDirector of Safety & Security Windsor International Airport ("YQG") is currently recruiting for a Director of Safety & Security to join our leadership team. We are looking for a result oriented, reliable, and highly adaptable individual that enjoys tackling various tasks in a team environment.
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Director Safety & Security provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for YQG's safety & security compliance functions, ensuring a strong organizational culture of safety, security, and accessibility. The role integrates and maintains safety and security management systems, oversees compliance with evolving legislation, and manages airport security, airport parking, and customer service. The Director acts as the airport's subject matter expert on regulatory requirements impacting safety, security, and operational partnerships.
General Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the Safety & Security department, including policy development, program administration, and team oversight.
- Supervise the Customer Service Coordinator and contracted service provider(s).
- Advise the CEO on departmental planning, integration, and business improvement initiatives.
- Champion airport-wide safety, security, and customer service strategies, ensuring proactive, risk-based approaches to prevention and response.
- Oversee the Airport Security Program, Security Management System (SeMS), Safety Management System (SMS), and related audits, investigations, inspections, and training, in accordance with the Canadian Aviation Security Regulations (CASR) and the Canadian Aviation Regulations (CAR).
- Ensure compliance with federal security mandates and implement SMS recommendations and action plans.
- Conduct incident reporting, root cause analysis, and specialized studies requiring data review and recommendations.
- Liaise with Transport Canada, agencies, partners, and tenants; serve as YQG representative at relevant meetings and industry forums.
- Maintain and monitor the YQG Accessibility Plan to ensure barrier-free travel and compliance with federal regulations.
- Track Transport Canada's Forward Regulatory Plan, assessing impacts on airport operations and regional economic development.
- Support internal and external communications, ensuring project deadlines are met.
- Participate in Business Continuity, Emergency Preparedness, and fire prevention planning; maintain all related documentation and work orders.
- Oversee airport parking operations, including staff and tenant parking management.
- Conduct risk assessments, asset-loss investigations, and coordinate with law enforcement as needed.
- Provide operational guidance to tenants on safety, security, and compliance matters.
- Monitor, educate, and enforce Airside Vehicle Operators Permit (AVOP/AVIP) requirements.
Qualifications
- A minimum of 5-10 years' work experience in airport, law enforcement, emergency prevention, consulting, or aviation operations.
- Post-secondary degree in Aviation Management, Airport Management, Public Policy, Business Management, or related field.
- Minimum two (2) years' experience in the development, implementation, and administration of safety management systems or emergency response planning including knowledge of legislation, relevant acts and standards.
- A recognized professional designation in Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) would be considered an asset.
- Incident Management Systems (IMS) or Incident Commander (IC) certification will be considered an asset.
- Strong communication, public relations, and report-writing skills; able to exercise tact and discretion.
- Skilled in legislative interpretation, inspections, audits, investigations, and deficiency reporting.
- Strong conflict-resolution, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
- Ability to develop and deliver training programs.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Able to obtain and maintain a RAIC.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel to offsite locations as required.
Compensation
This is a non-union position, and salary will be commensurate with the candidate's qualifications and experience. The position offers a comprehensive benefits package, including vacation entitlement and sick leave provisions.
