Position Overview

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Assistant Director of Surf Academy & Water Safety to support daily operations of our surf school and aquatic safety programs.

This role serves as the second-in-command to the Director, helping oversee surf instruction for beginner and novice surfers, lifeguard teams, safety protocols, and guest experience across both Bay and Reef Zones. You will be accountable for safety performance, guest experience, and upholding operational standards. The ideal candidate is a confident leader, strong communicator, and experienced water professional who is resilient and thrives in a fast-paced, high-standard environment.

Key ResponsibilitiesOperations & Leadership

• Support the Director in overseeing all surf academy and water safety programming and daily operations
• Act as on-site lead in the Director’s absence
• Assist in staff scheduling, training, and performance management
• Maintain a positive, team-oriented culture among instructors and lifeguards

Surf Instruction Oversight

• Ensure high-quality surf instruction within the Bay area (Beginner and Novice)
• Mentor and coach surf instructors to uphold teaching standards
• Assist in curriculum development and program enhancements

Water Safety & Lifeguard Management

• Supervise lifeguard team and enforce all safety protocols
• Conduct regular safety trainings, drills, and evaluations
• Ensure compliance with all local, state, and industry safety regulations
• Respond to and manage emergencies with professionalism and urgency

Guest Experience

• Deliver exceptional, hospitality-driven guest interactions
• Address guest concerns and ensure a safe, welcoming environment
• Uphold brand standards in all guest-facing moments

QualificationsRequired

• 3+ years experience in surf instruction, aquatics, or lifeguard leadership
• Current lifeguard certification (Red Cross, Ellis & Associates, or equivalent)
• CPR/AED and First Aid certified
• Strong leadership and team management experience
• Excellent communication and decision-making skills
• Ability to remain calm and effective in high-pressure situations

Preferred

• Experience in surf parks, wave pools, or structured surf programs
• Previous supervisory or management role in aquatics or hospitality
• Passion for surfing and ocean/water safety culture

Schedule & Compensation

• Must be able to work weekends and holidays
• Competitive hourly rate + Credit toward surf time
