Join a dynamic and operations-focused team as the Health & Safety Manager supporting the Edmonton Convention Centre at Explore Edmonton, where you will play a key role in ensuring one of Canada’s premier event venues operates safely for employees, guests, contractors, and partners.
Reporting to the Director, Facilities & Engineering, you will provide leadership for the Edmonton Convention Centre’s health and safety program. You will oversee the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of policies, procedures, and systems that ensure compliance with Alberta Occupational Health & Safety legislation and applicable regulatory standards.
In this role, you will serve as the venue’s subject matter expert on occupational health and safety, supporting operational teams with risk management, regulatory compliance, contractor safety, incident investigation, and emergency preparedness. You will also play an important role in strengthening a proactive safety culture across the organization.
This position may require occasional evening or weekend work in support of major events or urgent operational matters.
What You Will Do
- Provide oversight of health and safety programs across the Edmonton Convention Centre
- Develop and maintain safety policies, procedures, and safe work practices across departments.
- Ensure compliance with Alberta Occupational Health & Safety legislation and applicable regulations.
- Lead safety certification programs such as COR, ISO, or equivalent frameworks, ensuring audit readiness.
- Conduct regular inspections and safety audits to identify hazards and mitigate risk.
- Monitor contractor and exhibitor activities to ensure compliance with safety standards.
- Investigate incidents, injuries, and near-misses using root cause analysis and implement corrective actions.
- Track safety trends and recommend improvements to strengthen overall safety performance.
- Deliver safety training, orientations, and toolbox talks to employees and contractors.
- Provide guidance to managers and supervisors on safe work practices and legislative responsibilities.
- Support WCB case management and return-to-work coordination in collaboration with HR.
- Act as the primary liaison with regulatory authorities and inspectors on safety matters.
- Provide risk-based insights to support operational planning and major event operations.
What You Will Bring
- Post-secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety, Risk Management, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Professional safety certification such as CRSP, CHSC, NCSO, or similar designation is considered an asset.
- Minimum five years of health and safety experience, ideally within a complex operational environment
- Experience managing contractor or vendor safety programs.
- Strong knowledge of Alberta Occupational Health & Safety legislation and regulatory requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct risk assessments, incident investigations, and root cause analysis.
- Experience developing and implementing safety programs and emergency response procedures.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills when working with staff, contractors, and regulators.
- Experience working in or alongside unionized environments is considered an asset.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and safety reporting systems.
- Sound professional judgment, integrity, and attention to detail.
