We are in search of an experienced and motivated Director of Safety Management to lead and oversee all safety-related activities across our transportation and recycling operations.

Position Overview

The Director of Safety Management is a pivotal role that collaborates directly with the Operations and Logistics teams. This position is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing comprehensive safety programs to ensure alignment with DOT, OSHA, federal, state, and local regulations. This role will focus on risk management and enhancing safety performance throughout our trucking operations, recycling facilities, and field equipment maintenance. The ideal candidate will be a proactive leader with in-depth knowledge of current OSHA, FMCSA, and DOT regulations, and a strong commitment to fostering a robust safety culture.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance of all drivers with federal, state, local, and company-specific regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Establish and enforce policies and procedures that promote a safety-first culture.
  • Prepare and update training manuals covering plant operations, logistics, field maintenance, and administrative functions.
  • Oversee the onboarding and training process for Class A CDL drivers.
  • Develop training procedures for drivers and supervise driver trainers during this process.
  • Coordinate and facilitate safety meetings for plant staff and drivers.
  • Review drivers' hours of service records to verify safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Conduct in-field and camera-based audits of drivers and equipment to ensure adherence to safety standards and recommend corrective actions.
  • Perform safety audits at the plant and establish corrective action plans based on findings.
  • Coach drivers regarding safety violations and operational issues.
  • Maintain comprehensive records for OSHA, DOT, FMCSA, and other regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Collaborate with third-party safety firms for compliance reviews, training, and policy management.
  • Lead accident review committees and uphold safety standards.
  • Manage claims and investigations, providing thorough reports and corrective action recommendations.
  • Develop and maintain safety dashboards, key performance indicators (KPIs), and scorecards for drivers and plants.
  • Analyze safety metrics to identify trends and spearhead continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Work alongside Operations, HR, and Maintenance teams to integrate safety measures across all business facets.
  • Partner with a transportation compliance consulting firm to monitor driver credentials, manage certifications, maintain qualification files, and ensure adherence to drug and alcohol testing protocols.
  • Encourage a culture of safety, accountability, and employee involvement in all departments.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience in an OSHA/DOT safety role (preferred).
  • Bachelor's degree (preferred).
  • Thorough knowledge of DOT, OSHA, and FMCSA regulations.
  • Experience in conducting safety and site audits.
  • Preferred certifications in safety management.
  • Proven experience in managing and leading teams.
  • High level of adaptability.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and analytical thinking.
  • Strong leadership and communication abilities capable of influencing all organizational levels.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) with the ability to quickly learn new software systems.
