THE OPPORTUNITY: Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Advisor – IOL Kearl Lake - Fly In/Fly Out, Camp Provided

MFM Limited Partnership (MFM), a Mikisew Group company, is currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Health, Safety, & Environment Advisor to join our organization.

We are looking for a dynamic, proactive and passionate safety professional to provide safety leadership and field support for our Site Operations as part of our onsite HSE Team.

  • Shift: 11.50 hours per day - 14 days on, 14 days off. Work conducted under an Hours of Work Averaging Arrangement (HWAA) - formerly known as Compressed Work Week
  • Work Location: Position will be based at the Kearl Lake facility, located North of Fort McMurray, AB.
  • This is a Fly In/Fly Out (FIFO) opportunity with camp accommodations provided. Flights will be provided from the hub centers of Edmonton, AB and/or Calgary, AB with direct flights to site. Workers are responsible for travel to/from the travel hubs and their residence.

Purpose & Key Accountabilities

Working in a collaborative team, you will be responsible for the completion of a combination of daily administrative and field processes for our onsite HSE Department. This position is located at Kearl Oilsands site, located within the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, and will support our client services in light duty auto fleet, overhead crane, and mobile equipment maintenance activities. This is a fast-paced, results-driven role in a dynamic and exciting industry.

General Responsibilities and Duties include (but not limited to) the following:

  • Reporting to the HSE Manager, support the onsite Operations Group and HSE Team in implementing, maintaining, and executing the Mikisew Group Safety Management Program
  • Working closely with leadership, project teams, and sub-contractors to ensure a safe and healthy working environment.
  • Conduct regular site inspections and audits to identify potential hazards, non-compliance, and areas for improvement.
  • Lead incident investigations, root cause analyses and corrective actions to prevent recurrence and ensure continuous improvement.
  • Provide HSE training, coaching and guidance to site personnel, promoting a strong safety culture and fostering employee engagement.
  • Monitor HSE performance metrics and trends, reporting results to site and corporate leadership.
  • Assist in the management of emergency response planning and preparedness for the site, ensuring effective coordination and communication during emergencies.
  • Support environmental management and sustainability initiatives, including waste management, emissions reductions, and resource conservation.
  • Stay current with applicable HSE regulations, industry standards, and best practices, applying this knowledge to continually improve site HSE performance.

Qualifications, Education & Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in HSE roles within the oil/gas, Oilsands or large-scale mining/construction related industries. Recent experience at IOL Kearl site is an asset.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of regional, provincial, and Canadian HSE regulations, codes, and/or standards.
  • Strong understanding of oilsands operations and the associated HSE activities supporting skilled trades in those operations
  • Professional certifications such as CRSP, CSP, or CIH are considered an asset.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize competing responsibilities and tasks.
  • Clear and precise verbal and written English communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Including PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Outlook) and various HSE Management Systems (SaaS) and audit processes.
  • Ability to demonstrate personal commitment and positive attitude to the safety team.
  • High degree of accuracy, attention to detail.
  • High degree of knowledge of the following:
  • Alberta OH&S Act Regulation and Code
  • Energy Safety Canada Standards (I.e., Confined Space, Fall Protection etc.)
  • Incident investigation methods and techniques
  • IOL PSMS, LPS, and/or HOP (Human & Organizational Performance)

Mandatory Requirements

  • National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) certification at minimum. OH&S certificate or diploma are also accepted however candidate must have ACSA auditor status.
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license with satisfactory Driver's Abstract (less than 6 demerits)
  • Must be eligible to work on all Mikisew Group Industrial Client sites (no history of Site Access being denied by a client).
  • A valid ESC Common Safety Orientation certification.
  • Standard First Aid and Level "C" CPR
  • Successfully complete Site Pre- access Alcohol and Drug (PAAD) testing
  • Successfully complete a Criminal Record Check (CRC) as a condition of site access.
