The Mothers' Milk Bank of the Western Great Lakes is a non-profit organization that provides pasteurized donor human milk to premature and critically ill babies. We are an FDA Registered Food Facility committed to food safety, research, and innovation.

Position

Under the supervision of the Director of Operations, the Food Safety Quality Manager manages the milk bank’s food safety and sanitation programs. The Food Safety Quality Manager provides oversight and education to the production and logistics teams and has supervisory responsibility for the Facility Manager & Sanitation Lead.

Food Safety & Quality Duties

  • Manage every aspect of the milk bank’s food safety and quality assurance programs.
  • Champion a Food Safety Culture throughout the organization.
  • Ensure all products meet high safety and quality standards:
  • Evaluate sanitation, production, and logistics activity effectiveness to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Identify quality gaps and drive continuous improvement.
  • Provide education and training for aseptic handling of products.
  • Respond to complaints and internal incidents by initiating investigations, conducting root cause analyses, and implementing corrective actions.
  • Lead FDA, HMBANA, and SQF inspection preparedness activities:
  • Conduct internal quality and food safety audits.
  • Maintain an audit-ready facility 365 days a year.
  • Develop, validate, verify, and maintain the organization’s SQF System.
  • Review and update facility, lab, and logistics SOPs and SSOPs.
  • Lead Food Safety Plan review and revision meetings per Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) requirements:
  • Audit FSP compliance.
  • Ensure critical limits are monitored and documented correctly.
  • Maintain QA records and ensure QA activity completion (dish machine temperature verification, chemical testing, cleaning checklists, safety meeting minutes).
  • Collaborate with lab and logistics managers to hold safety meetings.
  • Provide food safety training to new and existing staff members and maintain staff training records.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Provide direct supervision for the Facility Manager, Sanitation Lead, and other facility positions.
  • Assist with applicant interviewing and onboarding.
  • Plan, assign, and direct work.
  • Provide employee feedback, performance reviews, and disciplinary action, when needed.
  • Assist in team building and conflict resolution.

Program Management Responsibilities/Duties include:

  • Identify goals, track progress, and meet with management to provide updates.
  • Create, maintain, and organize policies and procedures for all programs in shared Google Drive. Maintain contact lists, google sheets, and files to keep program data organized.
  • Update Milk Bank Google Calendar to schedule and plan events.

Experience

  • Bachelors of Science in food science, biology, or related fields required.
  • 5+ years experience in food safety or quality assurance.
  • Proven knowledge of food safety, GMPs, food manufacturing processes, and technologies.
  • Preferred certifications include: FSM, PCQI, HACCP, CFPM, and/or SQF Certified Expert.
  • Familiarity with FDA food manufacturing regulations for registered facilities.
  • FDA inspection experience preferred.
  • Ability to multi-task and work in a fast paced environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership and ability to set an example for others.
  • Solid troubleshooting, data analysis, and investigative skills.
