This position is based on site at the NWR Sturgeon Refinery working a 9/80 schedule.

Position Summary
Reporting to the Safety Lead, the Specialist - Safety is responsible to aid in the support of NWR’s Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) elements as a valuable member of the HSE team. This is predominately a field-based position involving regular interface with various stakeholders to support the operation and maintenance of the Sturgeon Refinery.
Responsibilities
- Understand, create and maintain a visible commitment to personal safety;
- Provide guidance, coaching and mentorship across the organization as an HSE leader;
- Build effective interpersonal relationships in addition to creating a positive and productive team-oriented environment;
- Monitor conditions/behaviors and recommend/implement solutions to correct field deficiencies or any vulnerability to the HSE system elements;
- Development, analysis and reporting of occupational injury and incident frequencies, and identifying leading indicator data;
- Advise NWR and contract stakeholders as a subject matter expert on Safe Work Standards;
- Support of day to day Refinery operation through regular contact with unit and shift operational leaders and frontline personnel;
- Knowledge as a lead or participant with hazard assessment and risk analysis processes;
- Facilitate planned or informal audits and inspections;
- Facilitate internal training and orientations;
- Lead or participate in incident investigations and facilitate use of electronic incident reporting software;
- Participate in contract reviews, monitor contractor performance and liaise with contractor leadership on a regular basis;
- Develop and champion innovative programs and HSE elements to support continuous improvement of the HSE management system;
- All other duties as assigned.
Skills & Knowledge
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written;
- Thorough knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation and Code;
- Solid interpersonal skills and the ability to work well in team environments;
- Strong influence and support skills;
- Professional and diplomatic approach to complex issues;
- Ability to make sound decisions under pressure and bring solutions;
- Self-motivated –works independently and in an organized manner with effective prioritization and time management skills;
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, Visio, Outlook, PowerPoint), PowerBi considered an asset.
Requirements
- Understands, creates and maintains a visible commitment to process and personal safety, as well as the safety of others; adheres to NWR’s Core Competencies to drive results and a high performing culture;
- A Degree/Diploma/Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety or related discipline;
- Minimum 5 years of experience in a Health & Safety role within an organization of significant size, complexity and diversity (preferably in an operating upgrading/refining or petrochemical complex);
- Must possess or be working towards Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation.
