The Health & Safety Officer is responsible for the implementation and oversight of health and safety management systems. In this role, you will serve as a strategic business partner, providing technical expertise and guidance to ensure regional compliance with Solico Metal Standards, corporate policies, and jurisdictional regulations. You will drive a culture of safety by engaging directly with frontline leaders and workers to identify hazards and implement robust risk mitigation controls.
Key Responsibilities
- Leadership Coaching: Provide direct H&S coaching to site leadership, safety committees, and embedded safety personnel.
- Risk Management: Conduct comprehensive risk assessments and develop safe work procedures that align with OHS expectations and company standards.
- Compliance & Enforcement: Monitor workplace adherence to safety policies; conduct regular site inspections, hazard assessments, and risk evaluations.
- Incident Oversight: Lead investigations for serious incidents (including recordable injuries and near-misses) and manage compliance with OHS inspections or regulatory orders.
- Auditing: Plan and execute annual COR audits; support regional teams in HSE audit preparation and participate in North American audits to identify and bridge compliance gaps.
- Training & Engagement: Deliver impactful safety orientations, toolbox talks, and training sessions to foster a proactive safety culture.
- Strategic Communication: Develop and distribute regional safety alerts, KPIs, and best practices to all internal stakeholders.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Education: Diploma or Degree in Occupational Health & Safety or a related field.
- Experience: 2–5 years in commercial construction, manufacturing, or fabrication.
- Regulatory Knowledge: Deep understanding of the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Code and provincial regulations.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in incident investigation, root cause analysis, and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Communication: Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively across all organizational levels.
- Logistics: Valid driver’s license and the ability to travel approximately 15% outside the local area.
