Job Profile Summary

Under limited supervision, this position is responsible for overseeing all training components relating to staff members of the Department of Safety, Security, and Emergency Preparedness (DSSEP) and reports to the Captain of Operations.

Responsibilities include developing and delivering classroom and hands-on training in the areas of ethics, situational awareness, interpersonal skills, patrol techniques, scene safety, investigations, criminal law, report writing, traffic control, defensive tactics, critical incident response, active assailant response, campus safety, medical first responder, Individual First Aid Kit (IFAK) application, CPR , and other related skills and duties.

The position requires management of personnel assigned to the Training Unit.

This position requires management of the department’s Field Training program.

The position may include other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Captain of Operations or the Associate Vice President of the department.

Minimum Education

  • Bachelor's degree required.

Minimum Experience / Training

  • Six years of law enforcement experience with at least three years as a full-time Training Instructor within a law enforcement entity and or criminal justice/academic institution.
  • SWAT / SRT

Minimum Training/Certification/Licenses Required

  • Valid Class E Florida Driver’s license
  • Florida General Instructor Techniques
  • Field Training Officer
  • Incident Command System (ICS)
  • Investigative Interviews
  • Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) – Basic
  • A combination of training, education, and experience may be considered to meet the minimum requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with developing, evaluating, and implementing training procedures for effective law enforcement/public safety services.
  • Experience with planning and managing operations, investigations, and or special events within a law enforcement organization.
  • Experience with composing comprehensive reports/briefings for senior leadership and or department head of training programs, processes, and after-action reviews.
  • Experience with evaluating law enforcement/public safety programs, practices, and equipment for review/recommendation to senior leadership and or department head.
  • Experience with evaluating, developing, and mentoring staff in a law enforcement organization or criminal justice entity.
  • Prior work experience within an educational organization/law enforcement training academy.

Essential Functions

  • Assist in developing and updating course curriculum and materials, lesson plans, and instructional guides to comply with standards stipulated by the DSSEP, Broward College, Florida College System and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
  • Facilitate dynamic, scenario-based training simulations to reinforce decision-making, teamwork, and safety protocols.
  • Responsible for conducting and delivering public safety training.
  • Stay current with changes in Florida law enforcement practices, procedures, and state regulations to ensure curriculum relevance.
  • Maintain accurate records of employee attendance, test scores, and training performance evaluations.
  • Ensure training documentation and activities comply with applicable accreditation standards.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local training requirements, manages certification processes and supports staff through orientation, professional development, and continuing education programs.
  • Serves as a liaison with the other agencies, educational institutions, and college departments to meet the training needs of personnel.
  • Assist the department’s Emergency Management team during training exercises with students, staff, and faculty.
  • Responsible for overall people management of the area, including recommendation of staffing, hiring, termination and discipline, setting performance standards and evaluating staff, and staff development and training.
  • Participate in audits or accreditation activities, as needed.
  • Enforces safety protocols during all training sessions.
  • Serves as a subject matter resource for specialized public safety training, crisis intervention, or de-escalation.
  • Performs other functions as needed.
