Alberta-Pacific Forest Industries Inc. (Al-Pac) is seeking a
Manager, Safety
to work out of our mill site near Athabasca, Alberta. The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting and ensuring Al-Pac maintains compliance with provincial and federal legislation, emergency response requirements and safety protocols
.

Role Responsibilities
- Monitor and review performance against KPIs and patterns of behaviour within the area of responsibility and takes action to improve performance and to resolve non-compliance with the organization’s policies, procedures, and mandatory instructions.
- Conduct ongoing assessment of safety program by analysing procedures, conducting risk assessments, and observing workplace operations.
- Lead and/or participate in workplace and/or incident investigations and perform, monitor, and assess site inspections and recommend corrective actions.
- Promote and enforce safety regulations and safe working practices.
- Support and Coach area leaders on safety systems and processes and compliance requirements.
- Lead internal HSS Management System reviews and audits and tack and close system level corrective actions
- Provide specialist advice on the interpretation and application of Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, Code, and regulations
- Provide specialist advice on the interpretation and application of Al-Pac policies and procedures, resolving queries and issues and referring very complex or contentious issues to others.
- Conduct trend analysis tied to root causes and make recommendations to leadership.
- Develop and monitor corporate safety goals and objectives.
- Responsible for the monitoring of leading and lagging indicators and identifying trends from within.
- Investigate incidents and reports, providing expert advice.
- Minimize risk exposures and ensure adherence with regulatory standards by working with all internal functions to make sure compliance programs are properly implemented.
- Regulatory scanning for upcoming OH&S, WCB, fire codes, E2 management changes
- Lead technical and high-risk assessments.
- Collaborate internally and work as a customer champion in cross-functional teams to build strong understanding of regulation and registration requirements.
- Conduct and monitor contractor pre-qualifications.
- Identify safety training needs and lead implementation of safety training programs
- Ensure there are common safety systems across the organization to increase compliance, build capability and share best practices.
- Increase the capability of leaders within the organization to learn from incidents, near misses, and hazard identification process
- Ownership of the Emergency Management System, including alignment with mutual aid and regulatory requirements
Role Requirements
- University degree in a related field (OHS, and emergency response) is required. An equivalency of a related diploma plus ten years of recent related experience will be considered. High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Occupational Health & Safety certificate is considered an asset.
- Canadian Registered Safety Professional considered an asset.
- 5-7 years working knowledge of Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Code and Act, and related legislation is required.
- Experience managing safety and security in the manufacturing sector is required.
- Forestry background or experience would be an asset.
- Ability to influence and collaborate with stakeholders at all levels.
Other
- Well-developed organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple assignments.
- Knowledge of Alberta WCB and Alberta OH&S legislation, compliance, and enforcement procedures.
- Knowledge of emergency response requirements and fire code safety.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships.
- Strong communication skills, both written and oral, including presentations.
- Knowledge of the interface between trades and management in the workplace.
- Knowledge and techniques of industrial hygiene.
- Ability to manage the demands of multiple stakeholders.
- Ability to identify and resolve conflictual situations.
- Comfortable with flexible work hours and some travel commitments.
- Valid drivers’ license with an acceptable driving history
