The role of Director of Health, Fire, and Life Safety at Barclays Center is a critical leadership position entrusted with the responsibility of safeguarding the arena and its occupants during normal operations and emergency situations. Reporting directly to the Assistant General Manager, this full-time exempt role demands a highly skilled professional who will oversee the comprehensive safety and compliance programs. The salary range for this position is competitive, between $132,000 and $140,000 annually, reflecting the significance and scope of the responsibilities.
The Director of Health, Fire, and Life Safety manages all aspects of fire safety, environmental health, occupational safety, hazardous materials, and emergency preparedness within a fast-paced and dynamic environment. They serve as the central figure coordinating with various internal departments such as event operations, security, engineering, guest services, and production, as well as external agencies including FDNY, DOB, NYPD, and other emergency responders. This position requires a robust understanding of relevant safety codes, regulations, and industry standards including those from NFPA, OSHA, EPA, and DOT.
In this role, you will lead the development and continuous improvement of the Emergency Action Plan, conduct training and drills to ensure staff readiness, and manage response efforts during alarms, evacuations, and medical emergencies. You will oversee critical fire safety systems such as alarms, sprinklers, extinguishers, and suppression equipment, ensuring their inspection, testing, and maintenance meet stringent safety requirements.
Furthermore, you will establish and maintain the arena's Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) management system, implementing health initiatives, hazard assessments, spill prevention strategies, hazardous waste management, and risk mitigation measures. You will also be responsible for maintaining accurate records, logs, and documentation required by regulatory bodies and insurance providers.
The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills with the ability to mentor staff and foster a culture of safety responsibility, communication, and accountability across all departments. Effective communication skills, adaptability in a dynamic environment, proactive problem-solving capabilities, and the ability to build strong relationships with regulatory agencies and vendors are essential. The Director of Health, Fire, and Life Safety will often serve as Manager on Duty, representing the organization’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety and compliance at all times.
- fsc certification or equivalent fire and life safety certification preferred
- bachelor’s degree in fire science, safety management, occupational health, or related field preferred
- minimum of 5 years experience in fire and life safety management or related field
- strong knowledge of fire and life safety codes, regulations, and standards
- exceptional leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
- ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
- proficiency in emergency preparedness planning and staff training
- ability to build relationships with regulatory agencies and vendors
- availability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends when necessary
