HEALTH AND SAFETY MANAGER
Located in Ottawa, Ontario, Central Precast was established in 1956 and began manufacturing precast concrete products for the general construction industry. The product line and manufacturing facility grew to include landscape, utility products, manholes, concrete poles, steps, barriers, and architectural panels. As the product line expanded, new companies were formed to focus on their specific industries, and The Precast Group was formed. The Precast Group has three manufacturing operations: Central Precast, MCON Products and Utility Structures Inc. The Precast Group is currently looking for a full-time permanent Health and Safety Manager to support their 3 locations in the Ottawa area.

Overview
Reporting to the VP of Operations, the Health and Safety Manager is primarily responsibility for leading and managing the Health and Safety department while leading the Company’s safety initiative. Development of a safety and risk management culture dedicated to being “best in class”. Assures the health and safety program is designed to comply with current Industry Regulations. The Health and Safety Manager also ensures the company is moving forward to meet the highest quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Develops a high performance, internal customer-oriented work team, through hiring, motivating, coaching, appraising and addressing complaints and resolving issues.
- Leads development of and clearly articulates Company’s safety vision, objectives, strategies, policies, and procedures to build a safety culture dedicated to behaviors which lead to best-inclass results.
- Lead and/or participate, monitor, and report on H&S strategic objectives
- Provides proactive leadership and assumes ownership of building a best-in-class safety culture by
- anticipating problems & providing solutions,
- sharing knowledge with, and providing training, to all levels of management, field staff and project teams,through interactions with clients, subcontractors, and inspectors, and
- creating an environment of learning, mentoring, and empowerment to promote employee engagement.
- Ensuring that the organization meets all agreed health and safety legislation and objectives and that appropriate risk mitigation/control measures are in place.
Key Responsibilities (con’t)
- Conduct regular touch points with ELT, Managers, Supervisors and Lead Hands to ensure safety issues are being supported and/or addressed by Safety.
- Responsible for all accidents, injuries, incidents and spill reporting from the site to the appropriate government agency and within the company.
- Assist in employee compliance and regulatory standards (Transportation of Dangerous Goods, etc.…)
- Manage work-related injuries and near misses – We want to make sure everyone that comes to work returns home the same (or better) at the end of the day. For this role, we need firsthand experience in investigations for accidents and near-miss occurrences, analyzing injury trends, and coordinating corrective actions.
- Lead/Manage all WSIB worker compensation programs and Return to Work Programs, and other related insurance documentation.
- Work with operational staff to develop, implement and enforce organizational Safety Operating Procedures
- Inform the company of trends through Safety Alerts.
- Manage/deliver employee orientations, onboarding and training requirements, from a H&S perspective
- Conduct site inspections of all facilities.
- Frequent site visits to projects
- Always keeps the company’s best interests in mind.
- Employee Management:
- Responsible for the growth and professional development of all members of the Safety Team
- Oversees hiring and succession management for the department.
- Maintain/Update safety files, employee records and training databases
- Work with HR to identify other related safety concerns
- Available for after hours emergencies, as when needed
- Perform other duties as required
Additional Responsibilities
- Occasionally attends meetings with the City of Ottawa, MTO, MLTSD and other clients regarding
safety topics. Offering expert advice and support and direction.
- Participate as the Chairperson on Joint Health and Safety Committee, schedule and attend
meeting and responsible for minutes.
Education and Experience
- 5+ years of proven success leading and managing a Health and Safety Program in an Industrial
manufacturing industry.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and lead company programs and change management efforts.
- Excellent communication skills both verbal and written, including high level of comfort
interacting with employees at all levels.
Education and Experience (con’t)
- Ability to inspire confidence in interactions with all internal and external stakeholders.
- Proven organizational and project management capabilities, experience managing multiple priorities and delivering on-time excellence.
- Proven collaborator with demonstrated experience building and maintaining trusted relationships with colleagues and external stakeholders.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Possess a valid Class G Driver’s License in good standing
- Previous experience working in a unionized environment
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail in all areas of work
- Ability to clearly communicate infractions and deliver repercussions
- Self-starting proactive individual who can work well independently and in a team environment
- Able to work well under pressure and multitask in a fast-paced environment
Assets
- College Diploma or University Degree, in health and safety
- 2-3 years of experience employee coaching
- Previous experience with JHS Committee in a chairperson capacity
- AZ Driver’s license for training purposes
- Certified Standard First Aid / CPR
- Any related heavy machinery training/certification
- WHMIS
- Bilingualism (English/French)

- Competitive industry salary ($90-110K)
