Reporting to the Director, Health Safety Security and Emergency Services, this position is responsible for managing the Health Safety and Environment Management System (HSEMS) at NAIT. The position serves as a subject matter expert and influencer who will guide the Institute (people, processes and practices) towards a systematic and strategic approach to Health Safety and Environment (HSE), inclusive of Quality Assurance, Regulatory Compliance and Training. This work involves managing the HSE department assets and achieving effective collaboration with key stakeholders, staff, students, external organizations, and regulatory agencies as part of the daily challenge. A key part of this role is the development and implementation of work processes required for successful project/program results as well as a strategic continuous improvement approach to improve program outcome.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supporting Promises to Staff and Students by providing a safe and healthy environment for NAIT staff, students and visitors by ensuring that the strategies and systems for the HSEMS are planned and executed to a high standard.
  • Supporting NAIT’s Promises to Industry and Alberta as well as NAIT’s economic viability by ensuring the HSEMS meets regulatory requirements, recommended standards and best practices in a cost-effective manner.
  • Leading the design, implementation, and evaluation of NAIT HSE programs, including policies, governance, risk mitigation, training, and audits.
  • Minimizing interruptions to NAIT operations through effective planning and coordination under an established HSEMS framework for business units and programs.
  • Proactively identifying and managing safety issues that emerge as part of program self-assessments and audits.
  • Implementing strategies to improve program and increase prevention and mitigation effectiveness.
  • Leading cross‑department post‑incident debriefs to determine root causes and implement corrective actions that prevent or mitigate future incidents.
  • Ensuring that effective processes based on project management best practices are used to develop and manage corrective actions/initiatives, including the proactive identification and management of safety issues for new initiatives.
  • Building strong relationships with multiple internal and external stakeholders, regulatory bodies, and other post-secondary institutions.
  • Mentoring, coaching and supporting staff and leadership teams, particularly area safety committees.
  • Maintaining high level performance by selecting, training, motivating, supporting and evaluating direct report staff.
  • Ensuring optimal use of human, financial, and physical resources to achieve budget and operational goals.
  • Leads strategic planning for the HSEMS, ensuring continued growth, relevance, and alignment with industry and Alberta standards.
  • Representing NAIT on external committees to strengthen partnerships, share best practices, and enhance NAIT’s visibility and influence in the broader safety community.

Skills & Abilities

  • Exceptional communication skills both verbal and written to convey complex safety concepts clearly to diverse audiences, influence decision-making, and build strong collaborative relationships across NAIT.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams, guide organizational change, mentor leaders, and build a culture of shared safety ownership and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborative, inclusive, and work effectively independently and in a team environment.
  • Strong knowledge of Health and Safety principles, OHS regulations, industry standards and contractor safety management.
  • Proficiency in utilizing OHS software, safety management tools, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong Interpersonal skills and the ability to build rapport with stakeholders and colleagues.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5-7 years of progressively responsible experience in health and safety roles.
  • Related experience working in a large diverse organization.
  • Experience working with and implementing health and safety management systems is required.
  • Preference for candidates who have successfully completed a Certificate, Diploma, or Degree in the field of Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Preference for candidates who possess the Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation.

Applicants with education credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentials evaluated by World Education Services (WES), International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS) or the Comparative Education Services (CES).

Remuneration: $102,224.98 - $135,432.18 annually, plus a comprehensive benefits package.
